Chauffeurs Insurance

A chauffeur is defined differently from a taxi driver for insurance purposes. This is reflected by the costs of chauffeurs insurance because it is considered to be a different level of risk to the insurer than taxi drivers insurance.

Essentially a chauffeur is an individual who only takes clients between point a and point b, when those appointments are pre-booked. Their vehicle should be an executive level vehicle (e.g. BMW, Mercedes, etc.) and there should be no two-way radio in the vehicle (as used in a taxi for contacting “base”) and there should be a regular work contract which covers the basis of the vehicle’s use and purpose in place. If all these things are true then the car would qualify for chauffeurs insurance and if not then it would be taxi drivers insurance that was required.

What is covered in a chauffeurs insurance policy?

Like most form of vehicle insurance in the United Kingdom there will be different levels of cover available depending on the level and type of cover that you require. The most basic policies will typically provide protection for collision (third party damage), fire and theft of the car. There are of course more options that offer greater levels of protection for liability in the event of a claim. You should talk to an insurance broker to full understand the options available to you. You don’t want too much for your premiums and at the same time you don’t want to find yourself in a position where you need to pay out expensive legal or compensation claims either.

There are also different policies depending on the number of drivers that you wish to insure, some offer improved premiums based on the age and driving record of named drivers. If you have a fleet of cars you may just want to go with a policy that covers everyone over the age of 25, for ease of administration – even though the unit cost of premiums may rise a little for generic cover.

There are legal minimums for all forms of car insurance and you must make sure that your chauffeurs insurance at least covers the basics.
